History of the Savon de Marseille. The origin of Savon de Marseille is the Aleppo soap from Syria, which has existed for thousands of years. The first French soap maker was established in the Marseille region in 1370. The soap recipes were regulated in the 17th century under King Louis XIV. Colbert issued an edict that limited the use of the name “Savon de Marseille” to soaps made with olive oil in the Marseille region. A minimum content of 72% fatty acids had to be guaranteed. The Marseille region had around 90 soap factories in the 19th century. The Today's Savon de Marseille, or Marseille soap, is a type of soap that results from the saponification of a mixture of purely vegetable oils with soda.
